Try a Tour by Car - A Day Trip To Gozo

One of the best days out when visiting the islands is a day trip to Gozo our sister island. The contrast between the islands is interesting, you will be able to swap the hustle and bustle of Malta for a more sedate pace of life for the day.

The beauty of taking a trip by car is that you can pretty well get around the major sites of the island of Gozo in a day. Although there are plenty of sites and things to do in Gozo the island is compact enough so no journey is more then around 10 minutes!

The Gozo Ferry

An excellent ferry service operates from Cirkewwa,
the ferries operate on a very regular basis and there is no reason to book. The vessels are well organised and have cafe services on board, the quick 25 min journey lets you take in the views of Comino and the blue lagoon on the way. There will be a great opportunity for photos of the port at Mgarr as you arrive in Gozo. If you leave around sunset you can also photograph the sunset over the island as you depart. For details of the ferry service call The Gozo Channel Company at Mgarr (Gozo) +356 21556114 or at Cirkewwa (Malta) +356 21580435.

Rabat (Victoria)

The Capital is the centre of life and the hub of Gozo, more or less all
destinations are accessible via Rabat which has the charm of an elegant market town. Make sure that you get your driver to drop you off and to explore the market and small shops. Visit the Cittadella is in the centre of Gozo. The small fortified town is situated on a promontory sited over the town of Victoria (Rabat). This lookout point was chosen because it was a naturally fortified hill which dominated the surrounding countryside and provided command of the coastal areas.

Ta’ Pinu Basilica ( ‘Of Philip)

This is a wonderful site that forms the most important location for pilgrimage on the Maltese Islands.
The basilica and church was built in 1920 and completed in 1935. The importance relates to Karmela Grima who in 1883 heard a call from an image of the Blessed Virgin. More history can be found at The site is very impressive and a place of peace and tranquillity. Less know is the wonderful walk through the stages of the cross. This can be found across the road and should not be missed.

The Azure Window

This natural rock feature is situated in Dwejra’s coast and an impressive feature of geology and the power of the sea. The rocks are peppered with fossils and marine creatures and the rugged coastline forms some of the most impressive coastal views on the islands
You can see the Inland sea and also Fungus rock. In addition the drive down the craggy and steep road to the sea has the most fantastic views. This area provides some of the nicest photo opportunities and is really worth a trip. You will notice a small church which is the chapel of St Anne. This was build in the 1960’s and is all that remains of a much older church.

Xlendi Bay

The bay is at the end of a ravine and is picture perfect!
Here you can find plenty of well marked parking and a selection of cafes and restaurants over looking the bay. The views are beautiful and there is good swimming for the children. It is possible to hire small plastic canoes for a small fee. The bay is a great place for lunch with many of the restaurants higher up the bay having outdoor sea view dining areas.
